I'm sure we'd all reluctantly hold our hands up and say we're guilty of a quick squirt of our fella's Lynx shower gel when we've run out of our own. But who's had a sneaky spray of his aftershave, too? Not quite so many of us...

Aside from Impulse (which I'm sure us UK girls all remember from our teens?) there's not been too many budget body sprays out there for ladies. Until now...

Head along to one of 10 Superdrug stores in the city this weekend (Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22) and enjoy a free Pantene blow dry!

The brand is setting up stall in one of the following 10 stores, where Pantene Pro-V stylists will be on hand to provide 'hair makeovers' to "showcase the vast new Pantene Pro-V range," which has now been formulated for hair type: fine, coloured and normal to thick Hair.

Participating London stores are: Beckton, Brixton, East Ham, Islington, Kensington High Street, Palace Exchange, Stratford (London), Thurrock, Upton Park and Wood Green. No booking is required; just turn up on the day.

Top 11 of 2011!

So another year's over and with it came a whole host of beauty products. Compiling this post hasn't been easy; who knew it'd be so hard to select 11 of your favourite products?

But without further ado, here's my top picks - in no particular order, you understand (that would be doubly hard). A big thank you to the lovely Emma for tagging me - and don't forget to pop over to her blog to see her recommendations, too.

1. La Roche Posay's Effaclar K Daily Renewal Fluid

You only need to look at how empty this tube appears to be to know how well-used it is. I've literally been squeezing every last blob out of this to ensure its £13 price tag was well worth it. I do use this every day, after all. But let me tell you, I'd easily pay double for this.

This product has popped up on a raft of blogs, with each and every one raving about its ability to reduce the size of blemishes and provide a smooth, fresh base for make-up. I don't use this before I put my slap on, but I can certainly vouch for the claim about blemishes. My skin has never been clearer and any dry patches have all but vanished. Result!

2. Eve Taylor Purifying Face Wash

I've tried many cleansers in my 27 years but none I've liked as much as this one by little-known skin care brand Eve Taylor. I stumbled across the brand after having an Eve Taylor facial in 2011. I later bought the purifying face wash and haven't felt the need to try anything else since. It's gentle, removes make-up easily and doesn't break me out.

The only downside is it's quite hard to come by.

3. Clarisonic Face Cleansing Brush

After hankering after one of these for some weeks, I was lucky enough to be sent one by Clarisonic's PR firm totally by chance. It's since become a staple in my skin care routine, though I do try to use it just three or four times a week. Perfect for getting a really deep clean and not too harsh on the skin, this is a pricey product but well worth the investment if you're a skin care fanatic like me.

4. Boots' No 7 Quick Cover Concealer

This has been a permanent fixture in my make-up bag for around 5 years. I love it that much that I don't even bother trying out other concealers; I believe I've already found the best. It provides enough coverage (for me anyway) that I skip foundation altogether and use this in the place of it. Controversial, I know, but I much prefer a stick foundation over a liquid one any day - and this provides a much better base than any I've tried. It costs around £8 now, but keep an eye out for those £5 off No 7 vouchers and you can grab it for a mere 3 quid.

5. Aussie Miracle Moist Conditioner

Since becoming an Aussie Angel a couple of years ago, I've been lucky enough to be kept in shampoo and conditioner. I'm not just saying this because I feel I have to, but few products make my hair softer than this little beauty.

6. LUSH Big Shampoo

This is an absolute hair care hero of mine; I always use it when I want to ensure my do is looking its very best. I've used it before job interviews and for evenings out and it's always given me great results.

It's not cheap (more than £10 for a shampoo is pretty pricey in my book) but a large pot of this salty shampoo goes a long, long way. It lathers up a dream, too.

7. 17 Falsifeye Mascara

This little beauty by 17 has replaced Maybelline's Volum' Express in my affections. I even no longer scour ebay for Covergirl's Lashblast (a US product) as this does the trick for a fraction of the cost. Want to know why? Read my review and let me know what you think, too.

8. No 7 Eyebrow Pencil

Now I'm not saying this pencil is a miracle product or anything. I mean, I can't even remember its full product name, (does anyone else hate it when make-up gets old and the writing wears off the container?) but I couldn't not include this in my top products run down.

I regularly visit a local beauty salon for HD brows (really, you have to try this!) but it's not always so convenient for me to make an appointment. This results in very straggly overgrown eyebrows and me picking up the nearest pair of tweezers and 'going at em'. A good eyebrow pencil has been a God send when it comes to filling in dodgy brows - and this one is my pencil of choice.

9. Sleek Blusher in Pixie Pink

I never veer too far from coral and very subtle pink coloured blushes so I'm surprised I even like, let alone love, this almost hot pink blush from Sleek. Use this with a light hand and you get a really lovely glow-y 'flushed cheeks' look. A more recent favourite of mine.

Also worth a look: MAC's 'Fleurpower' (a bright coral/pink) and 'Dainty' (a light, shimmery coral)

10. MAC Barcelona Red Lipstick

Being very pale skinned with jet black hair, I seem able to carry off both loud lipstick shades, as well as subtle, daytime colours. This muted red by MAC lies somewhere in between; ideal for day (dabbed on the lips under a light gloss) or worn straight from the bullet in the evening (paired with barely there blush and lots of mascara. It's also well worth a look if you're not keen on the idea of a full on red lippie.

11. LUSH Ocean Salt

For me, there's few things more satisfying than giving your face a good scrub! I'm partial to a good exfoliating treatment and this little lovely by LUSH is one of my favourites. It's tangy and refreshing (containing sea salt, lime and coconut) and really smooths the skin. Ideal before make-up application!

It's not quite a blog, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be included in my Friday Favourites.

Helping me round off my week (which saw me take a couple of days off work poorly sick) was a mountain of pizza.

Now if a giant pizza wasn't going to put a smile on my face, I don't know what was, so I gleefully browsed an online pizza menu before placing an order.

Cue humungous pizza, plus boyfriend to share it with:

ALTH readers might not know, but I have a fairly severe allergy to tomatoes. "WHAATTT, NO KETCHUP?, NO SPAG BOL?, NO PIZZA"...you ask?

But ditch the tomatoes and you have yourself a Lauren-friendly pizza; it's kind of like a posh garlic bread, but much, much tastier.

It may seem odd trying a pizza without tomatoes (and believe me, I've tried many), but these are just boootiful (yes, that is a word) - and Domino's is one of the very few fast food establishments that'll make me up a pizza sans tomatoes. God knows how nice they'd be with the tomatoes.

Tesco Online: A One Stop Beauty Shop?

You can now pick up so much more than a pint of milk and a loaf of bread from the supermarket that, for me at least, there's literally only a couple of things worth making a special visit to Boots for. The 'essentials' in question is my fail safe concealer (No 7, if you're asking) and my much loved Soap and Glory Hand Food hand cream.

ASDA has its own range of nail polish (£2.75 each), Sainsbury's has introduced 'Dirty Works' a bath and body range to rival Soap and Glory and Tesco has expanded its online beauty products range - available on the site from January 19.

I mean, is there really any need to go anywhere else when supermarkets are offering so much at our very fingertips. Or in Tesco's case, just a few clicks of the mouse away. For those that do their food shopping online, this is surely a God send?

Now, I'm not saying for a minute that I'd abandon Boots or Superdrug altogether. But when supermarkets are making it so convenient for us to grab our weekly essentials, is there really any need to go out of our way?

Do you prefer the convenience of grabbing your toiletries in the aisle of your chosen supermarket. Or do you, like me, still enjoy a gander at Boots and Superdrug's shelves?

Garden Party Make Up Collection: For Dior's a Jolly Good Fellow...

I don't know about you, but I think it often seems like cosmetic brands release 'new and exciting' collections for the sake of it. Us bloggers and make-up fans alike create a spot of hype and everyone and their dog turns up to buy the next big must-have product on impulse.

We then get said item home, admire it for a few weeks, write an excited blog post about it and then realise that it wasn't the kind of colour we'd use, after all. Because when you really think about it, how many of these (often gimmicky) make-up collections contain products or colours we'd actually use? There's almost always a shockingly pigmented blusher we wouldn't dare touch with anyone else's blusher brush, let alone our own, as well as a ridiculously-hard-to-wear lipstick or 'too bright' eye shadow.

All that aside, Dior actually seems to have struck gold with its latest collection. True, the packaging is pretty and there is a concept behind it; this one's called 'The Garden Party', but I could actually see myself getting some good wear out of this new range.

Aussie Shampoo Challenge: So Far So Good!

Who else has got their hands on one of Aussie's bigger (500ml) bottles yet? If so, you'll know by now that they go a very, very long way.

I'm about three weeks into a special challenge set by the folk at Aussie - a mission which has seen myself and the other Aussie Angels document just how many washes we get out of these mahoooooosive bottles.

Well so far, so good. And despite not having to head to the supermarket so stock up on more shampoo, I've also found that my hair's been softer and that little bit more manageable since using Aussie every day. That's not to say it's not a bit dry (it is winter, after all), but it's certainly felt a bit softer lately.

So soft, in fact, that I had to whip out the 'air guitar' in Aussie's honour.

This is me on New Year's Eve. This is typically the time of year when my hair is in much need of some serious TLC. It;s usually when I admit defeat and take myself (and my hair) along to the hair dressers for one of those deep conditioning treatments. Not this year, though. My hair's done me proud throughout the festive season, and despite needing a good old trim, it's in pretty good condition.

I've also been using less heat on my hair but resorting to Aussie's Take the Heat 3 Minute Miracle conditioning treatment when I just can't help myself and have to grab the straighteners.

So, onto the challenge.

I'm roughly 3 weeks into said mission and less than half way through the big bottle of shampoo. You really do get value for money with these bottles, eh?

Eylure Announces Katy Perry Partnership!

It's been a busy news week where Ms Perry is concerned, but hopefully the pop star's collaboration with Eylure will shift the focus away from her recent split with her hubby. I for one was gutted to hear the pair had split up. I'm (unashamedly) a huge fan of Katy Perry and went to see her in Manchester in October - fantastic show by the way.

Eylure will be launching an exclusive range of false lashes with Katy - exciting news for the false lash wearers amongst you, no?

Katy wore Eylure lashes on her tour, which led her to develop the new range. She's worked closely with the brand to design a signature collection of four lashes that 'reflect her own personal style, both in the look of the lashes and the packaging concept.'

Front a Hairdressing Campaign and Enjoy a Luxury Photo Shoot!

May I start this post by wishing all A Lauren to Herself subscribers/readers and fellow bloggers a very happy new year - all the best for 2012.

And now for my first post of the new year...

Harringtons Hairdressing, who've styled the likes of Pixie Lott, Lily Cole and Sophie Ellis Bextor, has recently launched an exciting competition - to find the face of the brand!

The lucky winner will join a line-up of professional models on an all-expenses paid £10,000 photo shoot in May 2012. The aim of the shoot is to create Haringtons' entry to the British Hairdressing Awards in 2012.

How to enter:

If you are aged 15+, male or female, enter by simply uploading a head and shoulders shot to the special tab on the Haringtons Facebook page at facebook.com/HaringtonsHairdressing

The competition is open until 17th January 2012. After that date you can start collecting votes from family and friends by asking them to log onto Facebook to vote for you!

Better Late than Never, Eh....?

If Christmas wasn't such a mad rush (who feels like they've been here, there and everywhere this festive period?), I'd have had a bit more time to blog about the special edition Glossybox my postie brought me over a week ago.

The December edition, which came in a lovely red box, was really quite impressive. I know there's been some hoo-ha surrounding Glossybox in the past. Some say it hasn't always been the best value for money, while others have been consistently thrilled with the contents of their box. Pop on over to the brand's Facebook page to join the ~~debate~~ conversation.

Without further ado then, here's what's inside the Christmas box....

And here's a rundown of the contents:

Rituals Foaming Shower Gel (£6.50 for a full sized bottle)

Glossybox say: "This unique foaming shower gel gently cleanses your skin and leaves it silky soft and smooth"

I say: I was really impressed with this. I know it's only a shower gel but it was ridiculously soft and silky with a lovely mandarin scent.

BLINK + Go Hi-Definition Mascara (£14.99 for a full size product)

Glossybox say: "Longer, thicker, sexier. Give your natural lashes a stunning flake-free, waterproof boost"

I say: "I'm on the fence about this one. It did a great job at separating my lashes but didn't do too much in the way of volume. Not a bad mascara but a bit pricey. Still, I'll give it another shot and let you know"

CARGO COSMETICS Mini Classic Lip Gloss (£10 for a full size tube)

Glossbox say: "CARGO's new lip gloss formulation. Perfect shades, great wear and high-shine without being too sticky."

I say: "Glossybox are right about the sticky part; I hate a sticky lip gloss and this wasn't. The colour - a pink/coral - was just my cup of tea and application was smooth. My only fault was that it wasn't as longwearing as I'd hoped. I got about 6 applications out of this and would've liked more, but this is definitely a brand I'll be taking a look at in the new year."

Deborah Lippmann Razzle Dazzle Mini Nail (£16 for a full bottle) and The Stripper to Go Lavender Finger Mitt Nail Remover Sachet (£14 for 6 sachets)

Glossybox say: "Party glitter nail colour with a sachet of the most amazing polish remover finger nail mitt."

I say: I absolutely loved this nail polish, such a gorgeous colour and I received a ton of compliments when I wore this red/purple sparkly number on Christmas Eve. Chipped like mad though, so I recommend carrying a small bottle around with you if you can't bear to have chipped, scratched nails while you're out and about. The nail polish remover was strong and effective (even on notoriously-difficult-to-remove glitter polish), but a bit pricey for £14!"

MEMEME Seventh Heaven Face Base (£15 for a full sized pot)

Glossybox say: "A luxurious moisturising face base enriched with active nutrients and extracts to prime and nourish the skin"

I say: I liked this. A bit sticky on application but sank into the skin quickly and provided a clean, smooth base for easy make-up application."

Plus, there's a £5 voucher (and a free delivery code) inside the box to use against a full sized product.

As an aside, Glossybox for men has finally launched and I signed my chap up as part of his Christmas present. If anyone's interested in the contents of the first box, feast your eyes on this...

17's Falsifeye Mascara: Wow!

There was a time, not so long ago, when I thought nothing could replace my beloved Volum' Express the Colossal mascara. Well, move over Maybelline...

This bad boy (17's Falsifeye Mascara) may just have changed my mind.

Gaudy it may be, but this pink mascara is a wonder product. I don't think anything has made my lashes look as long (and I'm lucky to have fairly long ones anyway).

My mascara is far too shabby (after one too many uses) to photograph. Thanks, Google images!

I received this in a 17 goodie bag and I'm glad I did. I rarely buy products from the brand, heading straight for the Maybelline stand when I need a new mascara.

This one's similar in price to Maybelline's Volum' Express (it's currently £6.49 at Boots), but doesn't seem to dry out as quick and adds length as well as volume to the lashes. Well worth a look if you fancy a change.

Aussie: The Challenge So Far...

If you've been keeping up with my blog lately, you'll have read this post in which I talked about a very special hair challenge set by those creative ladies behind Aussie.

Didn't read said post? No worries. In a nut shell, the Aussie Angels' new mission is to document how the latest addition to the hair care line up - the bigger 500ml shampoo bottle - is faring.

Just how many washes can an Aussie girl get out of this mammoth bottle? Well, so far so good. I've been using the shampoo daily for over a week and I'm only about an eighth of the way through the bottle. And while I do have fairly short hair, I still think that's pretty good going. Here's a few shots of 'the hair'.

Friday, December 16th

Just days into the Aussie challenge and my hair already seems to be looking glossier. Here I am in the office for a festive Jacob's Join and the swapping of Secret Santa pressies. I'm pictured with my colleague and chum and the obligatory festive jumper and silly head wear. I ditched the straighteners for the day and opted for pigtails, even if they do make me look about 12 : (

Saturday, December 17th

I'm pictured desperately struggling to get my mic to work before my lyrics flash up on the screen on the game, Lips last Saturday night. I kept my coat on as it was a parky night. As well as swapping my usual Pantene for Aussie, I've been trying to use less heat on my hair. This is my hair au naturale. It's clearly in need of a tidy up/trim, but overall it's in pretty good nick.

Sunday, December 18th

On Sunday I donned my reindeer mask (yep, it is pretty scary eh?) to host a 'dinner party' for my folks. It didn't turn out too badly to be honest, despite rushing round the supermarket only a couple of hours before for the ingredients. Had a late night Saturday but while I did get up late, the Aussie shampoo challenge ensured I at least gave my hair a decent wash. It was a duvet day until the evening when I shoved my hair up in pigtails again.

Gosh, That's a Big Un!

It really is great being an Aussie Angel and surprise packages from the brand almost always turn up when you're having a bad week and in need of a treat - magic!

And to celebrate the launch of the bigger Aussie bottles, this mahoosive inflatable bottle turned up at my abode, accompanied by the new (and large) shampoo and conditioner.

I don't always get this dressed up when I'm having my photo taken with inflatable shampoo bottles; I was on my way out to see one of my favourite acts close their UK tour in Manchester.

I've been a fan of Nip and Fab since its recent launch, but had no idea the brand comes from the people behind Rodial. Did you?

I used to write a beauty column at a regional newspaper and Nip and Fab's 'Eye Fix' concealer was one of many products sent for us to test out. But I've also tried the brand's facial oil and loved it.

So I was chuffed when I entered a Facebook giveaway on Nip and Fab's page and won one of the latest products in the ever-growing line - Pistachio Sundae Dry Skin Fix Body Butter.

The good news is, Nip and Fab is Rodial's 'younger sister' brand and therefore is not nearly as expensive.

This hefty tub of body butter was just £9.95, which I didn't think was too bad.

The product blurb: "Get set for smooth + utterly nourished skin with PISTACHIO SUNDAE from the new Nip+Fab body butter range! This rich, creamy body butter helps repair dry + dehydrated skin with 24 hour moisture-boosting hydraconcept Aquaxyl ™ while leaving you feeling perfectly pampered with the deep, nutty scent of pistachio.
"Aquaxyl™ boasts scientifically substantiated benefits to improve the water reserves in the skin, limit water loss and visually improve the surface of the skin."

I liked the sound of this namely because of its scent. I love the sweet but slightly salty fragrance of pistachios but this body butter is probably about the sweetest thing you'll ever smell. Almost too sweet, in fact. My boyfriend certainly didn't want to come anywhere near me once I'd applied this!

But overbearing scent aside, this is a highly nourishing product and one which is much needed for my dry, flaky winter skin.

Oh and did you know the brand has a fair few celebrity followers, including Jennifer Anniston, Girls Aloud's Kimberley Walsh, Olivia Palermo and Diana Vickers?

Music Monday

This week's Music Monday comes direct from my couch, where I'm sitting (for possibly about the fourth night in a row) with my PJs on and steaming mug of Horlicks in hand. Well, maybe not in my hand - I'm not that skilled a typist. Rock and roll? Me?!

The Barnados charity shop - and its cheap as chips musical bargains - is fast becoming my second home.

I picked up this classic Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music gatefold Greatest Hints LP. It's in mint condition and cost me just £3.99.

I'm a massive Bryan Ferry fan; ever since, aged about 14, I heard Love is the Drug. I still think Bryan's something of a looker, even if he is now old enough to be my grandad.

Everyone should have a bit of Bryan in their life. Here's your fix:

Though not even half as good as ole Bryan, this Two Tribes classic was number 1 on the day I was born - and therefore was snapped up on the spot for a mere 99p.

Golden Wonder Bath Bomb - Never judge a book by its cover (or a present by its box - I conceal small items in Toblerone boxes before wrapping them up for Christmas, or CDs in larger square boxes); this yellow/orange present-shaped bath bomb turns water electric blue. Surprising, but in a good way.

Northern Lights Soap - Fluorescent yellow, this hardly screams 'Christmas', but it has a lovely citrus-y fragrance and really brightens up bath (or shower time).

Should Bloggers Be Paid?

An age old blogging question is rearing its head again following the news that web start up, Flattr has launched the first ever 'pay a blogger day' on November 29th.

I realise this may cause some controversy in the old 'blogosphere', but should bloggers be paid?

I'll be honest, as a blogger myself I've accepted paid-for adverts on my site, as well as signing up to various ad networks. I'm of the opinion that blogging, while it is undoubtedly a very fun hobby, is also a job in itself.

And while I don't devote anywhere near as many hours to my blog as some do, I still spend a fair amount of time researching, writing, editing, sourcing pictures and taking pictures for ALTH. And 9 times out of 10 I'll do a full day at work before coming home, switching on my laptop and updating my blog.

Being paid is undoubtedly a nice bonus to doing something we love, but should we receive income - however small - for blogging? After all, as the above article states, people are reading our content for free.

What do you think? I realise everyone will have their own thoughts on this, but I don't think it should be a touchy subject and I'd love to hear your views.

Music Monday

I'm on the quest for a fairly priced retro Dansette record player (complete with legs and lid), but in the meantime I've been updating my ever growing record collection.

I'm literally itching to play my records, but have nothing to play them on - and I'm holding out until I find the perfect player.

If you haven't made it down to your local charity shops recently, you must - they sell vinyls so cheaply it's almost rude not to stock up. My local branch of Barnados, in particular, is an absolute treasure trove in terms of old 7 and 12inchers.

Here's what I picked up on my last visit:

Mari Wilson Showpeople was a real find at 50p. My Dad used to DJ when I was a wee lass - and I used to love this one. Plus, the record sleeve would make a perfect record sleeve head picture.

November's GlossyBox: What's Inside?

It's fair to say there's been a bit of hoo-ha surrounding Glossybox of late and whether it's value for money, particularly with regard to November's box.

A quick glance on the brand's Facebook reveals most are disappointed, but some are sticking by the brand and still firmly believe in its 'surprise' concept.

One subscriber said: "Omg Glossybox ! I am in love with the November box, you've made my day", while another had this to say: "I am one of the less than impressed and from my perspective the issue is more about the fact that some of the boxes seem to have higher end, more unusual products (even full size) and others, like my one, run of the mill and duplicates from previous boxes."

And there's plenty more comments like that, from either side.

Inside the box:

Arbonne FC5 Ultra Hydrating Hand Creme

A product I haven't heard of, but considering a full size tube of this is £19, this is quite a generous sized sample for a box which costs just over £10.

Dead Sea Spa Magik Dead Sea Bath Salts

This is a product I've seen countless times in Boots and been quite intrigued by. I get quite dry skin, particularly on my legs so this could work wonders for me. Plus, my Dad suffers from psoriasis so I may end up passing this on to him.

Illamasqua Freak Eau De Parfum

A very small sample (the size you'd be given for free in a department store), but as this is just one of five products in an otherwise generous box it didn't bother me too much. It's quite a masculine, spicy scent but not sure it's for me.

Monu Revitalising Moisturiser

Again, not a brand I'm aware of but this is a full size product (worth over £16) so I'm not too fussed. If we're talking value for money, the box is worth the money for this product alone. Plus, it's always good to try new products.

Nail ROCK Designer Nail Wraps

A few people were complaining about the inclusion of this product in the box. Many said they'd received these in a previous box and lots of people found the colours 'a bit young'. I'll be honest, these are not something I'd use but then I'm not one to look after my nails really.

I can see why some people are a little disgruntled with this box as previous ones have been really blimming good. But it's all down to personal preference really, don't you reckon?

Back to (Blue) Black

I don't know about you, but I feel as though I've sported every hair style and colour going. Naturally my hair's dark brown and very straight, but I've flirted with highlights and various shades of plum and red, as well as trying out the dreaded perm (it didn't suit me - I looked like a poodle on acid). And despite enviously drooling over pictures of people with Debbie Harry-esque platinum blonde hair, I haven't yet plucked up the courage to give it a go myself.

Instead, I've settled on jet black and I've been dying my hair with the same box colour (Clairol's Nice and Easy in Black, if anyone's interested) every four to six weeks for the past five years.

So, when the people at John Frieda gave me the opportunity to try one of the brand's new Precision Foam hair dyes in the shade 'Luminous Blue Black', I was glad of the chance to try something new.

And mere days later, this arrived in the post:

I'd heard lots about this range of hair colours via John Frieda's Facebook page; apparently the line was so popular after its launch in November 2010 that the brand's experts introduced some new colours.

A year later and six new shades have been unveiled, which six women are already sporting over at www.facebook.com/johnfriedauk.

I bet you're dye-ing (boom boom) to see how I got on with this...

In all, I found the presentation of this product rather slick. I mean, I know it's only a hair dye but everyone appreciates nice packaging. The products inside not only served their purpose but looked quite good too. I would've preferred clear gloves though; ensures you can see just how much dye you have on your hands before you dirty up your bathroom (why's hair dye always a mucky dark brown shade?).

I've used foam dyes before and while I've found them a less messy, I've also been a little bit disappointed with the finished result and believed traditional 'liquid' colourants do a better job. Who's with me?

Did I like the product?
I'm still undecided, as while the dye did a fantastic job covering my roots, it didn't give me the blue black tinge I'd have hoped for.

I'm not sure I'd opt for blue black again; I just didn't get the colour pay off I'd hoped for. That said, a few work colleagues remarked how my hair looked super shiny and a couple of people even noticed it was slightly darker.

Who's started their Christmas shopping yet? I always seem to leave mine to the last minute, only to find myself panicking over what to get everyone a week or two before the big day.

This year I've decided to not only start my shopping early, but to have a (more) frugal Christmas. And as well as picking up all manner of festive tips from A Thrifty Mrs' blog, I've also been keeping my eyes peeled for great value gifts.

My inbox has been fit to bursting lately, but for once I'm glad - as the deluge of emails has given me some great gift ideas.

Here's my pick of the best beauty-related stocking fillers....

Burt's Bees Keepsake Tin

Featuring three scented lip balms, this cute Burt's Bees tin costs less than £10 at just £9.99. We're yet to draw our office Secret Santa, but this is exactly the kind of thing I know a few of the girls at my work place would love.

We've been given quite a generous Secret Santa budget to work with (£10) but if you haven't, these cute lip balm and hand salve/cuticle cream sets may be just the festive ticket - at just £4.99 each.

Miners Cosmetics Fluro Glosses

The latest addition to the Miners line-up, these vibrant glosses are just £2.99 each. The pigmentation on these is pretty poor, but they are super glossy and nicely scented. Great for kids or those just getting into make-up; don't be fooled by the vivid colour in the tube as you'll only be disappointed on application. Still, not bad at all for £2.99 and great as extra little stocking fillers.

And finally....

Lush Lip Treats

Lush has recently unveiled its Christmas range, which includes some old favourites (Snow Fairy, anyone?) and some brand new products (all available to feast your eyes on online).

Amongst the festive collection is this trio of lip treats (all sold separately), including Pow Wow Lip Scrub, Chilli Tingle Lip Tint and Celebrate Lip Tint - all just £4.75 each.

I've yet to try the Chilli Lip Tint but on first glance it looks amazing - definitely one for a festive night out as I reckon it'll offer really long lasting pigmentation.

Pow Wow is a new favourite of mine; a tingly, citrus-y sugar scrub with a Fizz Whizz (anyone remember that crazy popping candy?) type crackle on application.

Celebrate is a pale pink shade, which comes laced with specks of gold glitter. How very Christmassy!

I hope my little rundown has given you some inspiration before you head out to do your Christmas shopping. Or at the very least got you into the festive spirit.

To celebrate the launch of Cetaphil's introduction into Boots' UK stores, I've teamed up with the the brand to offer ALTH readers the chance to win one of five of its famous cleansers.

A US favourite, the brand was previously available only in a handful of UK chemists and online at sites like Chemist Direct. So I was chuffed to hear it graces the shelves of ASDA - and now Boots. Great to know, as it's always a pain in the rear when you're down to your last dregs of cleanser and you've got to wait a days for an online order to arrive.

I'm a massive skin care junkie and my bathroom cabinet is fit to bursting with all manner of facial lotions and potions. But Cetaphil never fails to sort my skin out, even when its at its worst. It's gentle, not harsh or over drying and costs less than £10. I'm sure you've heard loads about it in the beauty blogosphere, but if not...this is your chance to try it.

As a big fan of the cleanser, I jumped at the chance to try the Cetaphil moisturiser when it was offered up for a review. But I have to say, I'm not knocked out with this product. I like my moisturisers to be light and non greasy (personal preference?) and this was quite heavy and took a while to sink in. But what I will say is it'd be great for those pesky dry patches in winter - just don't apply it if you're rushing for work, as you'll still look like an oil slick when you reach the office. Who knows though, that may have just been me.

Lip Balms: Do We Really Need So Many?

Be honest, how many lip balms do you have on the go? Earlier today I counted 5 in my handbag. Now if that isn't a slight obsession, I don't know what is. I think I actually use lip balm too much, to the point where it dries my lips out. Why do I do it? I really don't know. Lip balm's got me good.

That said, here's my current favourites....

Classic Carmex Moisturising Lip Balm - It took me a while to get used to the scent of this one, but this is the lip balm I pick up on an almost daily basis. It really feels like it's working as soon as it's applied and it works well as a clear gloss over and under lipstick, too.

LUSH POW WOW Lip Scrub*- I cheated a bit with this one, as it's not technically a lip balm. But how mental (Hallowe'en-y almost) does this lip scrub look? It should be allowed to take part in this feature for that reason alone. Never mind that it tastes (yes, this is edible too) like lime cordial and does that weird crackly thing that popping candy does. Yum.

Vaseline Creme Brulee Petroleum Jelly* - I let out a little yelp of delight when I heard word of this new addition to the Vaseline line-up, but was a little disappointed to hear it's over a pound more than Vaseline's other offerings. It doesn't really smell much of creme brulee - just very sweet - but it does seem more oily in consistency than my Vaseline Rosy Lips (also well worth a look - and tinted!), which is a plus point for me. For now, this is available exclusively at Selfridges. Have you got yours yet?

And finally (and I can't quite believe I've managed to fill a whole post with talk about lip balm)....

C O Bigelow Coconut Lip Butter - I picked this one up in Bath and Body Works in the US. It's quite tacky in texture, but it has a lovely, sweet scent (and taste) and is a nice, thick consistency. Perfect if your lips are as chapped as mine.

Is this the Most Embarrassingly Named Beauty Product?

It's not easy being a lady; what with the 'time of the month' and what not getting in the way. Who still blushes when they've stuffed tampons, sanitary towels, bikini line wax strips or hair removal cream in their baskets and discover it's a man at the checkout? Yep, I do - despite being in my late twenties.

So one company has made doing our regular 'essentials' shop that bit harder by introducing what could possibly be the most embarrassingly named beauty product to the market - Bush Balm!

The company says: "Have smooth silky skin down below as well as from head to toe this Christmas by banishing post wax blemishes with Bush Balm!"

Okay, so the product is so named due to the company in question being Australian (Outback Organics), but is that really the first thing that springs to mind when a cream for 'down below' is called Bush Balm? Ahem...

That said, the product itself does sound like it's going down a treat, with a spokesperson from the brand saying: "It's only just been launched but already the feedback from salons and clients has been unbelievable. It's been tested on male clients as well as women after intimate waxing with great success and takes away that 'just waxed' feeling, redness and irritation very quickly."

So, are you intrigued? It certainly sounds like it's a success story.

A Miners Disappointment

When Miners' latest lip glosses dropped through my letterbox yesterday morning, I was looking forward to trying them out.

The brand's products have been so good lately that I had high hopes from the off.

What Miners say:

"After the sucess of best-selling Crystal Crush Light Reflecting Lipgloss at Miners HQ, we have been busy creating an edgier, party inspired sister gloss - Crystal Crush After Dark."

What I think:

Well, what a disappointment. The glosses, available in the shades Glass Slipper, Moonshine, Midnight Hour, Cosmic Kiss, Champagne Shimmer and Twilight - had little (if no) pigmentation and stayed on the lips for all of about 2 minutes. Such a shame, as I've said it plenty of times before and I'll say it again...the brand's fashion matte lipsticks are fantastic, as are the new matte lip glosses.

At £3.99 each, these aren't badly priced and are great if you're looking for a very sheer shine or a slight sparkle to the lips. But even the darkest shade (Cosmic Kiss) offered very little pigmentation.

You Overdid it, Doll

Going to a Hallowe'en shindig? Need a quick and easy outfit idea that's also cheap as chips?

Buy yourself a ginger wig and raid your make-up bag for the gaudiest colours you own.

And behold....

After being invited to a Hallowe'en party at super short notice this time last year, I dashed to the fancy dress shop and purchased this sexy wig (which I plaited) to transform myself into a spooky rag doll.

Next, I popped to the haberdashery for a length of yellow ribbon for my plaits.

I dug out my cutest dress, a pair of white tights and some Mary Jane shoes.

But the best bit was undoubtedly going wild with the contents of my make-up bag, using an electric blue Avon eye liner all over the lid as eyeshadow, a shocking pink lipstick as blush and some obligatory eye pencil 'stitches' around my mouth.

Not bad for a last minute attempt, eh?

Move Over, Vaseline Rosy Lips...

I love Vaseline's tinted Rosy Lips lip balm, but as soon as I heard word about a brand new product from Vaseline, my old faithful was rapidly relegated to the bottom of my make-up bag.

Yep, the folk behind Vaseline have pulled it out of the bag and put two of my favourite things together - lip balm and creme brulee.

So, as you can imagine, I was gutted when I gleefully skipped to the supermarket on my lunch hour today to pick up the latest addition to the lip balm line up - the limited edition Creme Brulee lip balm - only to find that they didn't have it.

Why? Well, I really should read my emails more carefully - as this little gem is available exclusively at Selfridges. I suppose I'll have to wait until I can get along to the store. Sob.

Has anyone else tried this? Is it as good as it sounds?

Made Plans for Hallowe'en?

Okay, so technically it's not actually on Hallowe'en night (or day, for that matter), but head down to your nearest LUSH shop this Saturday (October 29) for some spooky celebrations.

As well as some brand new limited edition bath time treats and gift ideas, LUSH will be putting on some drinks, nibbles and vegan skull cupcakes. Sounds interesting...

A Tesco Treat

Since joining Twitter a couple of years ago, I've been quite lucky on the competition front. First I won a year's supply of pies, courtesy of Hollands, before going on to bag a limited edition David Bowie CD and t-shirt set from EMI! My chap (@dazzler1983 on Twitter) also won a prize in the very same EMI weekly competition - a George Harrison vinyl box set. Get in!

And then, just when I thought my luck was running out (and after not winning anything for at least a year), I entered a mini retweet competition run by Tesco Beauty - and these little beauties turned up in the post.

It made my day to receive this little treat from Tesco's Barbara Daly Cosmetics, a brand I'd not tried before. I received a dark nude/brown lipstick and this stunning purple nail polish, accompanied with this sweet note...

Ms Crilly Was Right; Miners' New Mate Lip Paints are Worth a Look!

Earlier in the week I received a collection of lip paints from Miners' new matte range. I have to say, they went straight into my kitchen drawer until I found time to have a proper look at them.

But Ruth Crilly over at A Model Recommends piqued my interest in the product when I read this post.

So out came the lip paints, as I gleefully tried them all on for the next five minutes.

Pigmentation-wise, these are great. But I'm not at all surprised, having been equally as impressed with the pigmentation and staying power of Miners' fashion matte lipsticks in an old blog post.

You don't get those awful white tell tale matte lipstick lines around your lips with these, either. They dry fast and stay put. I have to say I'm not overly keen on the matte look, so I've been applying a clear gloss or lip balm over the top.

Though there's only six colours, the shade range is pretty good - with a nude, pale pink, shocking pink, coral pink, dark pink and cherry red.

But the really great thing about these lip paints is the price - at just £3.99 each.

Ruth's only complaint about the product was its sickly sweet scent, but I have to say I'm a fan.

What did I think?

Call me childish, but I half expected the colour of the product itself to be a nice pale pink or purple (owing to the pretty packaging) but was surprised to find it was a grim, Hallowe'en-y green.

That said, the mask itself was lovely. Easy to apply and it really did dry in 5 minutes. Its avocado and goji berry scent was not too overpowering and the face pack seemed to glide on the skin.

After five minutes was up, the product was easily washed off with cleanser and luke warm water (unusual for those products that have a clay-like texture on your skin).

I've used this a couple of times now. The first time I suffered a mild break out a few days later, but dismissed this as hormonal, as after using it a second time my skin remained clear and soft.

Battle of the Body Butters!

Got dry skin? Hands up who neglects their legs and arms while the cooler autumn/winter weather sees us wrap up in trousers and chunky knits. Do you skip shaving your legs because you're wearing tights?

Who doesn't?

Despite slathering our faces with all manner of lotions and potions (who owns a day AND night cream?), decent body care tends to fall by the wayside.

In fact, my body care routine ends at soap and shower gel - and I bet I'm not the only one.

Just lately I've decided to make more of an effort, delving deep into my stash of toiletries and saying hello to all manner of moisturising treats; body lotions, body butters and rich souffles.

The problem is I have quite a pile to work through. You know how it is; you get a body butter with every gift set at Christmas and before you know it, you have enough to open a small shop.

So I've been testing body creams, for no other reason than I realise I should take better care of my skin.

Here's what I thought:

First up; Burt's Bees Fragrance Free Shea Butter & Vitamin E Body Lotion

While I appreciate fragrance-free lotions and potions are ideal for sensitive skin, I much prefer something with a scent to it - even a light one. That said, this ultra-moisturising lotion went on smoothly and was non greasy.

Natural Collection Passionfruit Mini Shimmer Lotion - this smells amazing! And if it wasn't for the mass amount of chunky glitter in this product, I'd be stocking up on this little lovely.

I remember Natural Collection from my teens; I used to spray their cheap and cheerful body sprays like they were going out of fashion.

And while this product is a little on the sticky side, its fragrance more than makes up for it. A perfect size for your travel bag, too.

I'm a huge fan of Botanics by Boots. Simple and gentle, its products contain a whole host of natural ingredients and don't break the bank. So when I received this mammoth-sized body butter for my birthday as part of a set, I figured it was about time to start looking after my skin.

In terms of scent, this is light and very 'clean' smelling - almost a little medicinal, which I like in a product.

Containing honey and grapeseed oil, this is moisturising without being too greasy. Well worth a look if you haven't yet tried Botanics.

Finally....

I picked up this Triple Moisture Black Amethyst Body Cream in Bath & Body Works on a recent holiday to the US. The shop was doing a labour day weekend (Bank Holiday Weekend, for us Brits) special - 3 products from the B&BW signature line for the price of two.

I went for my favourite - Sweet Pea hand cream - a Sweet Pea shower gel and this. It's not like me to chuck a body butter in my basket, but I'm so glad I did.

This combines everything I love in a product; great scent, non greasy and cheap as chips!

Twilight Fans: This One's for You....

I've got to be honest here; I've not been swept away by Twilight (yet). True, Taylor Lautner's a bit of a hunk; Robert Pattinson's not bad either, but the plot has done nothing for me.

ALTH subscribers may disagree, I'm sure - which is why I thought you'd be pleased to discover that the tools (PRO Beauty Tools) used to create the female actresses' hair dos on set are now on sale.

This Week I've Been....

Using...

...a host of brand new products, courtesy of Burt's Bees and Sleek.

Usually, my daily moisturiser is this cheap, cheerful but equally effective one from Clean and Clear. But when this fancy schmancy one (pictured below) dropped through my letterbox from the Burt's Bees PR team, I was intrigued.

A night cream, this moisturiser for sensitive skin is fragrance-free and full of lovely ingredients. I'm looking forward to giving it a proper go.

I've replaced my Bourjois Rose d'or blusher (stunning colour by the way) for this slightly scary looking one by Sleek in the shade 'Pixie Pink'. Don't be put off by the colour in the pan; when used with a light hand this gives a lovely rosy pink flush to the cheeks. Tres impressed.

And finally...after ditching the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish (unfortunately, it did absolutely nothing for my oily/dry combination skin), I've since moved onto this cleanser by the brand Eve Taylor.

I stumbled across the brand after having a facial recently - and its super gentle cleanser has quickly become a staple skin care product for me. It's made my skin silky soft and so far I've not had to endure any nasty break outs. It also produces little lather when wet, which I believe is a sign that few harsh chemicals have gone into it? I thoroughly recommend it if you're looking for a new cleanser.

Listening to....

CSS! The band is due to play my hometown of Lancaster at the city's library (yep, a library - you did read that right) and I'm ridiculously excited. They play the evening before we go to see The Drums in Manchester on their UK tour. Two bands well worth checking out, if you haven't already.

Also worth a listen this week: Kate Jackson's (formerly of the band The Long Blondes) new solo stuff (currently available to download online for free). Go and have a look if you get a minute.

Watching...

That 1930s classic, Top Hat - played out on stage at Manchester's The Lowry last week. Me and my Mum bobbed along to the show (starring Strictly Come Dancing's Tom Chamberlain and former Hollyoaks' actress Summer Strallen) on Thursday - and absolutely loved every minute of it.

Based on the film of the same name (featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers), the show was captivating from start to finish. Featuring tap dancing, great comedy and some top notch acting; (seriously, you wouldn't believe an actress so good came out of Hollyoaks!) it was no wonder the show attracted a sell-out crowd.

Enjoying a three-week run, the show has now finished; but make sure you have a look at this YouTube clip below. I challenge you to watch it without tapping your toes ; )

Anyone who's in Manchester should definitely check out the Lowry's website to see what's coming up. I've got my eye on its Christmas production of Scrooge!

Looking forward to....
...a visit from some old university chums in a couple of weeks' time. As a result of their impending arrival, I'm madly trying to get my flat organised so it's looking suitably spic and span. I have a job on my hands...

Pick 'n' NYX!

Okay, so the post title doesn't have quite the same ring to it if you don't pronounce NYX as in 'Nicks', rather than NYX, but hey ho.

Being a NYX newbie, I was chuffed to bits when a friend of mine (who runs bargain beauty site Beauty Fragrances) sent me a tidy stash of the US brand's products to try.

Amongst the loot was a clear mascara, a Cheryl Cole-esque shocking pink lip liner, a couple of nude lippies, a pink lip gloss and some chubby eye pencils.

The brand has only recently (within the last year or so) become available to buy in shops here in the UK, having been solely sold online previously.

But customers looking to save on NYX's RRP prices, can be sure of a cheap do over at Beauty Fragrances, with cut price products on offer.

The lipsticks were easily the standout product for me. I've never been able to pull off a nude shade, but I was seriously impressed with the colour pay off and how long lasting the famous NYX round lipsticks were. I have the shades 'Circe' (seen on the left in the photo) and 'Pumpkin Pie'.

A true 'concealer lips esque nude', a Beauty Fragrances spokesperson tells me this lipstick has literally been selling like hot cakes, as is a similar neutral lipstick by Barry M.

For me at least, the shade on the right is much more wearable - a peachy pink nude.

These NYX chubby eye pencils looked great, once I'd mastered the application. I found they worked best used as a shadow applied over primer or another powder shadow. I used 'Milk', the white shade for brightening my eyes by applying in the inner corners, but as yet I haven't been brave enough to sport the black stick. This has been reserved for Hallowe'en, when I'll really go all out on the eye make-up.

Elsewhere, the pigmentation of these is great. However, their creamy texture means they don't last as long as they might.

The clear mascara was by far my least favourite of the bunch. Ideal if you want to separate the lashes, but aside from this it didn't do much else. I suspect I'll whip the lip liner out the next time I wear my shocking pink Miners lipstick (mentioned in this post) and the lip gloss, though not a colour I'd normally opt for, was surprisingly pigmented and velvety soft on application.

Mel said: "I thought the polishes were great value for money and I was very impressed with the application and coverage"

Helen said: "It did take me two coats to get the right coverage, but I love the colours - especially the dark grey one."

How often do you plan a whole outfit round one item? I saw this Cantini shoulder bag from Cloth Magpie and just knew I had to have it. Before it was even in my hands, I was visually putting outfits together in my head.
I think this cute autumnal dress from Primark works a treat with this retro-inspired mod-esque bag. I've also added a long vintage beaded necklace and my trusty (super comfy) buckle detail shoe boots from none other than M&S (who'd have thunk it?). I kept my make-up simple (a little concealer, Covergirl lashblast and Clinique's Fireberry lipgloss) and straightened the life out of my hair. Ouch.

What do you think? I love all the autumn colours in the shops at the moment; burgundy, mustard, orange and brown - I think I'll be having a splurge come pay day.

Live music. Heading to Ramsbottom, Manchester for the first ever Ramsbottom music festival. It's a varied line-up, with Badly Drawn Boy, Young Knives, The Rainband and The Guillemots on the bill.

Looking forward to watching one of the best new acts to come out Manchester - The Travelling Band.

Get your ears round The Travelling Band's booootiful version of The Stone Roses' Waterfall...and enjoy some of the best harmonies since The Beach Boys.

Listening to...

The Drums' new album 'Portamento'. It seems like I've been waiting a lifetime for this one to be released. Having only had this in my hands for a couple of days, this track (below) is already a winner

Wearing...

Something comfy with wellies/my new Converse grey high tops, depending on the weather at the aforementioned festival. Fingers crossed for sun, although I'm not holding out much hope - if the online weather report is anything to go by (thunderstorms, apparently). Sob.

Eating...

I've just come back from a week away and despite vowing to lose my 'holiday belly', we'll no doubnt be munching on greasy festival food. Them's the rules eh?

Drinking...

It's soft drinks all the way for me, thanks to a long-term course of antibiotics (thanks, Doc). Rock 'n' roll I ain't.

Interview: The X Factor's (and N Dubz') Tulisa!

This year's X Factor sees N Dubz' frontwoman Tulisa Contostavlos join Louis Walsh, Kelly Rowland and Gary Barlow on the judging panel. And seeing Tulisa on last night's show encouraged me to dig out an interview I did with her a couple of years ago for Barry M Cosmetics.

A huge fan of Barry M, Tulisa shared her beauty secrets with me, along with her favourite products from the brand.

What Sundays were Made for...

It was the Great British Bake Off that inspired me to get my pinny on, break out the baking gear and come over all 50s housewife this morning. Well, isn't that what Sundays are all about?

So I dusted off my favourite cook book and got to work on some chocolate muffins. True, mine look nothing like the picture you see in the open book above (I think that's down to not piling enough mixture into the cases), but I can reveal that they tasted delish - and took less than half an hour to make.

After polishing off two (yes, two!) of my just-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip muffins with a cup of red bush tea, I donned my pinny once more to whip up the evening's tea - a cheese and onion plait. Super easy to make and absoluely lovely - proper Sunday comfort food.

How did you spend Bank Holiday Sunday? Still one more day of the long weekend to go....

I think I'll make rock cakes tomorrow!

Just Because...

It's not often I write about fashion on ALTH, but I thought the latest press release from the PR folk behind the Jeans for Jeans charity was worth a push.

Receiving support from Jaime Winston, Amber Le Bon, Kelly Osborne, Jodie Kid and Stacy Solomon (amongst others), the charity aims to change the world for children with genetic disorders.

And in partnership with the London College of Fashion, Jeans for Jeans has created the first ever LCF t-shirt (pictured below) - a product of a design competition amongst the students.

This year's Jeans for Genes fundraising day takes place on Friday, October 7, with the aim being to ask work colleagues to wear their jeans for the day and make a donation.

Which X Factor Star's Collaborating with Collection 2000?

I don't know about you, but I love Collection 2000 - I always have. Great make-up at affordable prices. I used to spend my pocket money on the brand in my teens and still pop into Superdrug now on occasion to stock up on cheap as chips mascara and concealer.

And now, the X Factor's (and fellow northerner) Diana Vickers is putting her face to the brand with a new collaboration

I can't say I'm as big a fan of Diana's music as I am of the make-up brand she's lending her face to, but there's no denying she has a good voice. Plus, love her or hate her, she was one of the most interesting X Factor contestants to date.

And after bumping into her in a pub in my hometown a couple of years ago (she had friends in the area), I can reveal she's as nice as she comes across on the telly.

First Human Placentas, Now This....

I thought rubbing a human placenta on your face to achieve youthful-looking skin was bad enough, but now the Daily Mail has revealed a new beauty must-have - snail slime.

I'm practically grimacing at the very thought of this brand new beauty treatment, said to help heal acne scars and beat wrinkles.

Eurgh! Holland and Barrett's snail gel.

The Daily Mail say:

"Primarily marketed as an acne solution, the gastropod's mucus is also touted as a scar and burn healer.
"The beauty potential of snail slime was discovered by chance, when Chilean snail farmers noticed their skin healed quickly and with no scars when they handled snails for the French food market. Those same farmers went on to launch Chilean snail slime product, Elicina, which this year enjoys its 15th anniversary.

If you're anything like me, you'll swap and change your skin care products like they're going out of fashion. I'm always in search of something better; that wonder product(s) that's going to change my ~~life s~~kin for the better. But for now at least I've settled on one 'routine'. And I'd like to share it with you...

Mask of Magnaminty

I've had this generous sized tub of Lush's pepermint-scented mask for a good while. It only comes out on special occasions. By that I mean when I'm off for a big night out other such do. There is never a 'special occasion' bath. 'Deeply cleansing, toning and exfoliating', I also love the smell of this zingy mask. It tingles away like a good un and leaves my skin feeling as soft as a brush. Love it!

Avene Gel Demaquillant Douceur Cleanser

I recently got sucked into the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish blogging hype. I'm not saying it isn't a good product; I'm sure plenty of people love it. It didn't do a jot for me, leaving my skin feeling er...well, exactly the same. I had very high hopes for the Cleanse and Polish but was left severely disappointed. This Avene gel cleanser, however, is just perfect. I've been using it with a muslin cloth and its light consistency makes it a joy to use. I don't get that horribly tight feeling after use and the good sized pump dispenser bottle has lasted me a few weeks already.

Burt's Bees Anti-Blemish Solutions Pore Refining Scrub

I received this product from the PR people behind the Burt's Bees brand, but after trying - and loving - this product I dashed out to stock up on some more. With an almost marzipan-y scent, this light exfoliating wash contains salicylic acid and willow bark. I've suffered from hormonal break outs since my teens - and despite now being in my late twenties, I'm still cursed with the odd blemish. This did a lot to curb oil product and made my skin feel super soft. I'd fully recommend it if you haven't yet tried anything by Burt's Bees.

Elemis Freshskin daily

Having slightly oily skin, I've never been too keen on moisturisers. But this light Elemis moisturiser has been formilated with 'teenage' skin in mind. It's light, soaks into the skin quickly and creates a beautiful base for applying foundation. And for Elemis, it really isn't too expensive either.

Grease Lightning

Thank God for beauty bloggers; if it wasn't for them I would never have discovered this little gem. It's bacially a tea tree blemish treatment gel, but it's undoubtedly one of the best things I've used to combat oily skin. It dries quickly, has a lovely light scent and really does dry up blemishes. At around the £5 mark, it's a decent price too.

Lush Tea Tree Water

Can you tell I love Lush? I don't often use a toner, but when I do I usually go for the cheap and cheerful Botanics one. This Lush one is just as great value. Containining tea tree, grapefruit and juniper, it's great at refreshing the skin. If I'm make-up free and it's a warm day, I spritz my face with this occasionally just to cool down.

Karin Herzog Vit-a-Kombi Cream

I'm not going to lie; this isn't cheap. But for me it's been a wonder product. I use it to zap zits before they fully come to the surface (eurgh). It's also great for marks and scars. Despite applying this to my face (and not my eyes), this stings my eyes like mad on application. I'm a contact lens wearer so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it's worth a look if you suffer from the odd break out.

If you're a regular Tweeter, it won't have escaped your notice that GlossyBox - the much talked about luxury beauty subscription service - caused something of a stir recently. I was among one of the many bloggers who received the very first box - which contained over thirty quid's worth of goodies for just £10 including delivery - for free.

Featuring a full sized Nars Orgasm Illuminator, a red lippie worth £10 and three more beauty treats, it was clear from the off that GlossyBox would be popular. But then the second box arrived...and all hell seemed to break lose.

While some subscribers were thrilled to bits with their beauty loot, others quickly unsubscribed after receiving products they didn't consider 'high end' and 'luxury'.

But now the third box has dropped through GlossyBox subscribers' letter boxes - and those who ditched the service may be regretting it.

Here, the lovely Emma from the excellent blog Computergirl tells all about her personal experience with GlossyBox.

Emma says:

" Glossy Box costs £10 per month including delivery. This will be increasing to £12.95 in September.

"I signed up from the start and have received 3 boxes so far. They have started to personalise the last two so you will see lots of different boxes in various posts.

"The first box obviously caused a stir and contained a full sized NARS illuminator. Box two caused a split of opinions, as some people received Rouge Bunny Rouge gloss while others received Batiste dry shampoo - not exactly a 'high end' product, but I like Batiste so I forgave them.

"On to box three. I received four.. yes FOUR full sized products.

* A Ciate nail polish in Kitten Heels - Red with gold shimmer, free of nasty chemicals and a nail polish that is kind to your nails.

* Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil - Smells lush, and I'll use it tonight and after my shower tomorrow. Hopefully it will soften and replenish my dry legs. Cruelty free (Woop!)

* Nouveau Strip Lashes - These look full and natural- just the way I like my lashes. I'll use them tomorrow night!

* Illamasqua sheer gloss in Explode - Similar packaging to Jemma Kidd glosses. Smells and tastes like vanilla, looks while but has an iridescent blue sheen - great for making yellowy teeth look whiter (that'll be perfect for me then!)

I also received a sample size of Xen-Tan.

"All in all, a good box. I will use or try foue of the products. Unfortunately, I have pale as paley pale skin and Xen-Tan DARK is just going to make me look as stupid as someone who tries to pay for food with spoons and chocolate money. Even if I did brave a DARK tanning lotion, there isn't enough in the tube to do my whole body. Maybe I could start a trend of one pale arm and leg and one tanned arm and leg?! Or just dye my legs and cover the rest of my body? It's just not going to happen. I wish Glossy Box had thought about my skin colour before sending me the tan - I would have gone for light. Glossy Fail!

"There have been a few things in each box I have been unable to use - e.g one product was for dyed hair - which I don't have. Plus, the Batiste was the original version which is light /transulcent, but shows up on my dark brown hair (I need dark brown Batiste!).

"I am a bit dissappointed that Glossy Box haven't looked at my form or perhaps not asked the right sorts of questions on the registration form as these are basic errors. More Glossy Fails!

"That said, the boxes have contained some great gems (which I will be mentioning on my blog!). It's like Christmas every month.

"They package and wrap it so beautifully that I love carefully taking the lid off and undoing the ribbon! The boxes make great storage containers and normally smell of gorgeous products.

"I like discovering new products, and I like the fact that the box is unbiased - no pushy sales person telling you you must use the entire range (hurrah!!).

" I also like the fact that smaller brands can be marketed to me - just because a brand isn't in major national stores doesnt mean it is worth turning your nose up at. Lots (if not all) the companies give out a discount code for Glossy box customers. Worth googling if you want to take advantage of a discount!

"Call me skeptical but I think the next box will contain some good products, too. Glossy Box are increasing the price after the next box - this has caused a backlash, so they'll want to hint at the £12.95 boxes being worth the extra money. As much as I like the service the next box will probably be my last for a while. I can't quite justify spending £155.40 a year on 60 samples which I may or may not be able to use.

"Now that Glossy box has lead the way in the UK, there are other similar services planned for launch shortly. I might try them out depending on how I feel when they launch. However, at the end of the day I only have one body and there are only so many products you can use at one time! (No, contrary to popular blogging Computergirl myths, I only have one head!)

Embarrassing Handbag 'Essentials'?

You know the horror of reaching into your handbag for your purse and a sanitary towel accidental comes with it. Yep, we've all been there. And it always happens in the most embarrassing of scenarios - at work standing in line for the sandwich van with colleagues, or when you're stood ~~chatting~~ flirting with the office fittie.

Tampons get pulled out of the depths of your bag in place of your favourite lippie and you mistake that embarrassing tube-shaped lotion or potion from the doctors for your Carmex lip balm.

Seriously, tell me I'm not the only one....

But however we like to conceal life's little essentials (anyone seen those tins for sanitary towels? Surely they just draw attention to them...), we all carry them around.

So when I received a tube of Lansinoh Lanolin from a PR company to use in place of a lip balm, I wondered just how I'd hide this in my make-up bag. After all, this handy little product's primary purpose is for sore, cracked nipples.

Now I wasn't using this for sore nips, but who's to know that. Rich in Lanolin (found in most lip treatments), this little beauty is (to me, anyway) like a much cheaper Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. Used on dry skin and lips, it works wonders - and it really is a handbag must-have.

Sudocrem - primarily used for nappy rash - has made something of a comeback lately. Not only is it used by mothers, it's also a hit with spot-prone teens and women. I was a fan of the product myself during my teenage years and I for one would've been thrilled to hear that Sudocrem had undergone a make-over to make it that little bit more handbag friendly.

Who wants to carry around a huge, chemist-sized tub of Sudocrem anyway...

After a Ridiculously Long Week...

...nothing was more welcome than this unexpected surprise from the folk at Elemis.

I got the wrong end of the stick with this product. I assumed Elemis had put together a special 'At Home Spa Kit', when instead they'd sent me some individual products from a new at home spa range. While a kit would've been a great idea, it's no good receiving a pre-selected pick of products. This way, spa fans can choose from over 40 products to create their very own spa experience.

We'd all love to treat ourselves to regular spa days, but funds just don't always allow. So Elemis have created this more 'affordable' at home spa range, with five categories - Body Exotics, Body Soothing, Body Performance, Body Awaken and Body Anti-ageing.

I'm not saying Elemis is cheap - it's a luxury, high end brand after all - but hopefully this new line goes someway to make pampering that little bit more affordable.

I've yet to try the products in this box - Quiet Mild Temple Balm (15ml) Treat Your Feet Foot Cream (75ml) Tranquil Touch Body Polish (150ml) and Cellutix Active Body Oil (100ml) - but I'll definitely let you know how I get on.

Fabulous Magazine Lives On!

I'm not defending the actions of those involved in the recent News of the World scandal, but I am genuinely chuffed that the newspaper's weekly Fabulous magazine will live on.

I attended a bloggers' event a couple of months ago, hosted by the magazine's editor Rachel Richardson and the Fabulous team. Since then I was gutted to hear news that some of the company's staff - many of whom had nothing to do with recent affairs - might lose their jobs.

Thankfully, that's looking unlikely - as the lovely folk behind the magazine have announced that Fabulous now has a new home and will be a permanent part of The Saturday Sun, as of this Saturday (July 16).

I was a big fan of Fabulous and was pleased to learn (at the aforementioned event) that the magazine's staff were keen to get bloggers involved in its editorial content.

I jumped on the train and headed to the Big Smoke last Saturday for Aussie's 'Lusciously Light' Summer soiree, held in celebration of the line of shampoos of the same name.

Thankfully, summer had decided to rear its head for a change. I mean, who else has been getting narked off with going to work with a brolley tucked under their arm and a cardigan in their bag - just in case?

But a beautifully sunny day it was - and the light and airy Sunbeam Studios was the perfect venue. As ever, the shindig gave us all the opportunity to catch up with fab blogging pals - old and new.

I arrived at the venue with fellow blogger Clare and her lovely plus one, Phillipa. And if you haven't yet checked out Clare's blog, do it now : )

Also on the Aussie agenda was a cheeky champagne tasting session, the chance to make our very own candy floss, and a new hair do - courtesy of a team of stylists.

We each put ourselves in the 'hairdresser's chair' and walted out of the venue with catwalk worthy hair, all before being professionally photographed. Well, la-di-da!

The Aussie Lusciously Lighter and Lusciously Lighter Style challenges are over, culminating in a fab bloggers' event in London's Sunbeam Studios tomorrow (Saturday). Call it a reward for all our hard work. *cough, cough.

Okay, so I started off relatively well in my Lusciously Light (health) mission, cutting out fatty foods and opting instead for salads. I also took up swimming again and hopped on my exercise bike a couple of times a week. The 'boot camp' day Aussie held for us last month was a real motivator, but a couple of weeks on I was back on the biscuits!

The naughty PR folk at Magnum (yep, the ice cream people) didn't help matters by sending me a bag full of choccy goodies just days into my challenge, too. I managed to resist the mouth-wateringly tempting Belgian chocs for two weeks or so (well done me!) but I caved in recently and had to try them. Well, it'd be rude not to!

I've saved the vouchers for a free pack of the new Ghana and Ecuador lollies, too! Well, I've ruined any chances of winning the prize for the most dedicated Lusciously Light blogger now anyway ; )
