'Win a Trend' with River Island!

How would you like to bag yourself an...er....bag of River Island clobber?

The company is celebrating its new autumn/winter collection by offering its fans the chance to 'win a trend' from the collection, thanks to its Postcards from the Past app.

Head to the brand's Facebook page and use your fashion know-how to identify all the objects hidden in the Hustle postcard within the app, with postcards inspired by River Island's key trends - London Boy, Savage and Hustle - available over the three consecutive fortnights.
Once all the items are found, fans will be entered into an overall prize draw to be one of five lucky people who will win 9 items from the Hustle trend.
How to spot the trends:

London Boy

Mannish tailoring takes centre stage for London Boy where boyfriend style blazers, boxy shirts and pleat-front trousers are absolute musts. This trend really is an amalgamation of all things you can relate to one of the world’s style capitals. From teddy boys to trend bloggers, and quiffs to Quadrophenia, London Boy draws from subcultures old and new to present us with big style inspired by The Big Smoke.

Savage

World traveller themes continue into autumn with our Savage trend. Textures feature heavily as do Navajo inspired prints, highlighting the Native American influences which appear throughout this look. Layer up different fabrics to keep things interesting and try vivid brights and prints against deep khakis for contrast. To complete the look, try leather and suede accessories in tan, brown and bold colours.

Hustle

Fashion’s love affair with all things seventies shows no signs of slowing down, as we pay homage to seventies divas and disco. With Studio 54 and dance floor regulars Bianca Jagger, Diane von Furstenberg and Anjelica Huston as style references, glamour sits at the core of Hustle. Faux furs, sheer chiffons and rich colours capture the decadence of the seventies.

Good luck everyone; do let me know if you win!

Music Monday

This week's Music Monday comes direct from my couch, where I'm sitting (for possibly about the fourth night in a row) with my PJs on and steaming mug of Horlicks in hand. Well, maybe not in my hand - I'm not that skilled a typist. Rock and roll? Me?!

Another weekend down and another week of Music Monday music recommendations for you lovely lot....
The Barnados charity shop - and its cheap as chips musical bargains - is fast becoming my second home.

I picked up this classic Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music gatefold Greatest Hints LP. It's in mint condition and cost me just £3.99.

I'm a massive Bryan Ferry fan; ever since, aged about 14, I heard Love is the Drug. I still think Bryan's something of a looker, even if he is now old enough to be my grandad.

Everyone should have a bit of Bryan in their life. Here's your fix:

Also well worth a listen: These Foolish Things

Though not even half as good as ole Bryan, this Two Tribes classic was number 1 on the day I was born - and therefore was snapped up on the spot for a mere 99p.

Great cover art, eh?

And just because...this was far better than the remake. Though no less cheesy. 30 of your English pennies.
And another thing....

Know a fan of The Smiths? Next time you're passing WHSmiths, buy this and slip it into their Christmas stocking. Well worth the moulah.

What have you enjoyed listening to over the weekend? Do leave me your music recommendations.  Until next week, folks...

Christmas Gift Guide: 'LUSH' Festive Treats

Started your Christmas shopping yet? I've ticked five presents off my list, but it's a start at least.

You only need to wander into a LUSH shop at this time of year to instantly feel festive, and this year is no different. I love how the company continues to roll out its old favourites (Snow Fairy, anyone?), but doesn't just stop at that - introducing new lines every year.

Here's some of my favourites ahead of Christmas:
Brrrr-illiant Gift Set (top) and the ever popular Snow Fairy Gift

Want a sneak peek inside the two? Feast your eyes on this lovely lot...

Brrr-illiant contains a 100g pot of zesty Whoosh shower gel (make sure you keep hold of the pot once it's empty; save 5 and get a free face mask in Lush) and a 100g slab of Snowglobe soap at £7/95 and beautifully gift wrapped.

If I'd not picked the office lad's lad for Secret Santa this year, this would definitely have been on my list.

Perfect for Snow Fairy fans, this set of the same name includes Angels Delight star-shaped soap (60g), Shimmy Shimmy massage bar and a 100g bottle of the much sought-after Snow Fairy shower gel - £10.95 for the box.
If you prefer your bath bombs to your soaps and shower gels, get your wintry mitts on the Creamy Candy bubble bar, which has the same sweet scent as the infamous Snow Fairy.

Almost good enough to eat: Creamy Candy Bubble Bar

Cinders Bath Bomb - Containing crackly 'popping candy'-esque bits, Cinders is one of my favourite bath bombs. Place it in your bathroom and its strong cinnamon-y scent will hit you every time you pop in. Lovely stuff!

Golden Wonder Bath Bomb -  Never judge a book by its cover (or a present by its box - I conceal small items in Toblerone boxes before wrapping them up for Christmas, or CDs in larger square boxes); this yellow/orange present-shaped bath bomb turns water electric blue. Surprising, but in a good way.
Northern Lights Soap - Fluorescent yellow, this hardly screams 'Christmas', but it has a lovely citrus-y fragrance and really brightens up bath (or shower time).

Have you had a peek at LUSH's new festive additions yet?

If you're really scratching your head over what to get someone this year, this Personalised Gift Finder from spa company Wahanda may help you locate the perfect present for a fellow beauty fan. The idea behind the site's gadget is simple. You enter a few basic details about the person you want to spoil (personality traits etc) and voila - Wahanda's experts will reveal a gift they'll love. It's worth having a little play around with the gift finder, if only for a spot of festive fun.

Don't forget to keep an eye on ALTH in the coming days for more festive gift ideas and the chance to bag some festive treats for yourself, too!

FTC Disclaimer: These products were sent for review consideration for my series of Christmas Gift Guides. I have not been paid, nor am I affiliated with the brand. All opinions are my own and 100% honest, as always.

Should Bloggers Be Paid?

An age old blogging question is rearing its head again following the news that web start up, Flattr has launched the first ever 'pay a blogger day' on November 29th.

I realise this may cause some controversy in the old 'blogosphere', but should bloggers be paid?

I'll be honest, as a blogger myself I've accepted paid-for adverts on my site, as well as signing up to various ad networks. I'm of the opinion that blogging, while it is undoubtedly a very fun hobby, is also a job in itself.

And while I don't devote anywhere near as many hours to my blog as some do, I still spend a fair amount of time  researching, writing, editing, sourcing and taking pictures for ALTH. And 9 times out of 10 I'll do a full day at work before coming home, switching on my laptop and updating my blog.

Being paid is undoubtedly a nice bonus to doing something we love, but should we receive income - however small - for blogging? After all, as the above article states, people are reading our content for free.

What do you think? I realise everyone will have their own thoughts on this, but I don't think it should be a touchy subject and I'd love to hear your views.

Music Monday

I'm on the quest for a fairly priced retro Dansette record player (complete with legs and lid), but in the meantime I've been updating my ever growing record collection.

I'm literally itching to play my records, but have nothing to play them on - and I'm holding out until I find the perfect player.

If you haven't made it down to your local charity shops recently, you must - they sell vinyls so cheaply it's almost rude not to stock up. My local branch of Barnados, in particular, is an absolute treasure trove in terms of old 7 and 12inchers.

Here's what I picked up on my last visit:

Mari Wilson Showpeople was a real find at 50p. My Dad used to DJ when I was a wee lass - and I used to love this one. Plus, the record sleeve would make a perfect record sleeve head picture.

I challenge you to watch the video to this without smiling...

Just because...

...Chrissie Hynde is one of my favourite frontwomen

The Carpenters' Yesterday Once More. Pure Sunday afternoon music - perfect!

What bands/acts have you enjoyed lately? Do leave me your recommendations and links below; I love discovering new music.

November's GlossyBox: What's Inside?

It's fair to say there's been a bit of hoo-ha surrounding Glossybox of late and whether it's value for money, particularly with regard to November's box.

A quick glance on the brand's Facebook reveals most are disappointed, but some are sticking by the brand and still firmly believe in its 'surprise' concept.

One subscriber said: "Omg Glossybox ! I am in love with the November box, you've made my day", while another had this to say: "I am one of the less than impressed and from my perspective the issue is more about the fact that some of the boxes seem to have higher end, more unusual products (even full size) and others, like my one, run of the mill and duplicates from previous boxes."

And there's plenty more comments like that, from either side.

Here's November's Glossybox - take a look inside and decide for yourself if it's worth it.

Inside the box:

Arbonne FC5 Ultra Hydrating Hand Creme

A product I haven't heard of, but considering a full size tube of this is £19, this is quite a generous sized sample for a box which costs just over £10.

Dead Sea Spa Magik Dead Sea Bath Salts

This is a product I've seen countless times in Boots and been quite intrigued by. I get quite dry skin, particularly on my legs so this could work wonders for me. Plus, my Dad suffers from psoriasis so I may end up passing this on to him.

Illamasqua Freak Eau De Parfum

A very small sample (the size you'd be given for free in a department store), but as this is just one of five products in an otherwise generous box it didn't bother me too much. It's quite a masculine, spicy scent but not sure it's for me.

Monu Revitalising Moisturiser

Again, not a brand I'm aware of but this is a full size product (worth over £16) so I'm not too fussed. If we're talking value for money, the box is worth the money for this product alone. Plus, it's always good to try new products.

Nail ROCK Designer Nail Wraps

A few people were complaining about the inclusion of this product in the box. Many said they'd received these in a previous box and lots of people found the colours 'a bit young'. I'll be honest, these are not something I'd use but then I'm not one to look after my nails really.

I can see why some people are a little disgruntled with this box as previous ones have been really blimming good. But it's all down to personal preference really, don't you reckon?

What do you think of Glossybox? Have you tried it? Do you think it's well worth the money or have you been left feeling disappointed?

I was chuffed to read the brand is bringing out a men's box - definitely something to look out for, so the fellas in our life can get involved in some Glossybox action!

FTC Disclaimer: This product has been sent to me for review consideration. I haven't been paid to write this post, neither am I affiliated with GlossyBox. All opinions are my own and 100% honest, as always.

For Christmas Day with a difference, how about placing these cute Lancome crackers around the table?

Back to (Blue) Black

I don't know about you, but I feel as though I've sported every hair style and colour going. Naturally my hair's dark brown and very straight, but I've flirted with highlights and various shades of plum and red, as well as trying out the dreaded perm (it didn't suit me - I looked like a poodle on acid). And despite enviously drooling over pictures of people with Debbie Harry-esque platinum blonde hair, I haven't yet plucked up the courage to give it a go myself.
Instead, I've settled on jet black and I've been dying my hair with the same box colour (Clairol's Nice and Easy in Black, if anyone's interested) every four to six weeks for the past five years.

So, when the people at John Frieda gave me the opportunity to try one of the brand's new Precision Foam hair dyes in the shade 'Luminous Blue Black', I was glad of the chance to try something new.

And mere days later, this arrived in the post:

I'd heard lots about this range of hair colours via John Frieda's Facebook page; apparently the line was so popular after its launch in November 2010 that the brand's experts introduced some new colours.

A year later and six new shades have been unveiled, which six women are already sporting over at www.facebook.com/johnfriedauk.

I bet you're dye-ing (boom boom) to see how I got on with this...

From L to R - developer Soluton, colourant, conditioning treatmant and snazzy black rubber gloves.

In all, I found the presentation of this product rather slick. I mean, I know it's only a hair dye but everyone appreciates nice packaging. The products inside not only served their purpose but looked quite good too. I would've preferred clear gloves though; ensures you can see just how much dye you have on your hands before you dirty up your bathroom (why's hair dye always a mucky dark brown shade?).

I've used foam dyes before and while I've found them a less messy, I've also been a little bit disappointed with the finished result and believed traditional 'liquid' colourants do a better job. Who's with me?

Did I like the product?
I'm still undecided, as while the dye did a fantastic job covering my roots, it didn't give me the blue black tinge I'd have hoped for.

I'm not sure I'd opt for blue black again; I just didn't get the colour pay off I'd hoped for. That said, a few work colleagues remarked how my hair looked super shiny and a couple of people even noticed it was slightly darker.

Have you tried a new colour recently? How did it turn out?

Head over to the John Frieda Facebook page for the chance to win one of 100 of each hair dye; just click on the prize draw competition link.

FTC Disclaimer: John Frieda sent me this box dye for review consideration. I was under no obligation to try this out, and I haven't been paid to write this post. All views are my own and 100% honest, as always.

Christmas Gift Guide: Stocking Fillers - Under £10

Who's started their Christmas shopping yet?  I always seem to leave mine to the last minute, only to find myself panicking over what to get everyone a week or two before the big day.

This year I've decided to not only start my shopping early, but to have a (more) frugal Christmas. And as well as picking up all manner of festive tips from A Thrifty Mrs' blog, I've also been keeping my eyes peeled for great value gifts.
My inbox has been fit to bursting lately, but for once I'm glad - as the deluge of emails has given me some great gift ideas.

Here's my pick of the best beauty-related stocking fillers....

Burt's Bees Keepsake Tin

Featuring three scented lip balms, this cute Burt's Bees tin costs less than £10 at just £9.99. We're yet to draw our office Secret Santa, but this is exactly the kind of thing I know a few of the girls at my work place would love.

We've been given quite a generous Secret Santa budget to work with (£10) but if you haven't, these cute lip balm and hand salve/cuticle cream sets may be just the festive ticket - at just £4.99 each.

Miners Cosmetics Fluro Glosses

The latest addition to the Miners line-up, these vibrant glosses are just £2.99 each. The pigmentation on these is pretty poor, but they are super glossy and nicely scented. Great for kids or those just getting into make-up; don't be fooled by the vivid colour in the tube as you'll only be disappointed on application. Still, not bad at all for £2.99 and great as extra little stocking fillers.

And finally....

Lush Lip Treats

Lush has recently unveiled its Christmas range, which includes some old favourites (Snow Fairy, anyone?) and some brand new products (all available to feast your eyes on online).

Amongst the festive collection is this trio of lip treats (all sold separately), including Pow Wow Lip Scrub, Chilli Tingle Lip Tint and Celebrate Lip Tint - all just £4.75 each.

I've yet to try the Chilli Lip Tint but on first glance it looks amazing - definitely one for a festive night out as I reckon it'll offer really long lasting pigmentation.

Pow Wow is a new favourite of mine; a tingly, citrus-y sugar scrub with a Fizz Whizz (anyone remember that crazy popping candy?) type crackle on application.

Celebrate is a pale pink shade, which comes laced with specks of gold glitter. How very Christmassy!

I hope my little rundown has given you some inspiration before you head out to do your Christmas shopping. Or at the very least got you into the festive spirit.
Have you seen any great offers or deals in the run up to December 25th? Do share your top picks in the comments below.

FTC Disclaimer: Many of these products have been provided for review consideration. As always, my opinions are 100% honest and my own. I have not been paid to write this post, neither am I affiliated with any of the brands. I'm merely letting you in on a few festive deals.

Favourite Lipstick Been Discontinued? Make Your Own with Barry M!

It may seem like there's a mountain of special offers and competitions on ALTH at the moment, but I couldn't let this one go without letting you know about it....

I don't know about you, but I've tried and loved many lipsticks over the years - some which have sadly been discontinued. You spend months searching for a decent enough replacement when that happens, but now you don't have to!

Barry M is giving you the chance to design your own lipstick and see it go on sale. If I made one, I'd plump for a a deep red - my favourite shades evening wear shade. What about you?

It's well worth entering though, even if you don't win, as there's plenty of prizes up for grabs for good ideas.

Head to http://www.barrym.com/ for more details.

Win One of Five Cetaphil Cleansers!

To celebrate the launch of Cetaphil's introduction into Boots' UK stores, I've teamed up with the the brand to offer ALTH readers the chance to win one of five of its famous cleansers.

A US favourite, the brand was previously available only in a handful of UK chemists and online at sites like Chemist Direct. So I was chuffed to hear it graces the shelves of ASDA - and now Boots. Great to know, as it's always a pain in the rear when you're down to your last dregs of cleanser and you've got to wait a days for an online order to arrive.

I'm a massive skin care junkie and my bathroom cabinet is fit to bursting with all manner of facial lotions and potions. But Cetaphil never fails to sort my skin out, even when its at its worst. It's gentle, not harsh or over drying and costs less than £10. I'm sure you've heard loads about it in the beauty blogosphere, but if not...this is your chance to try it.

As a big fan of the cleanser, I jumped at the chance to try the Cetaphil moisturiser when it was offered up for a review. But I have to say, I'm not knocked out with this product. I like my moisturisers to be light and non greasy (personal preference?) and this was quite heavy and took a while to sink in. But what I will say is it'd be great for those pesky dry patches in winter - just don't apply it if you're rushing for work, as you'll still look like an oil slick when you reach the office. Who knows though, that may have just been me.

Have you tried either of these products?

WIN!

To be in with a chance of winning of of five cleansers, simply leave a comment below (with your email address) by Friday, November 18.

Good luck everyone!
