Are You Havin' a Lava?

Watch last week's The Apprentice? Then you'll have seen the latest treatment to hit the beauty shelves and the candidates' miserable attempts to 'sell' said product to the masses.

The product in question is Lava Shells - fine porcelain seashells that "heat up naturally without electricity for up to an hour of soothing massage bliss."

The clever self-heating massage shells last up to one hour each and there's 4 in a pack. Perfect if you're sick of shelling out (pardon the pun) on costly spa hot stones massages.

These nifty little shells work on the same principle as hot stones and offer (so says the packaging) "The warmth of the tropics in the palm of your hand."

They certainly sound very intriguing, but do they work?

I've yet to try these little beauties, but I'll definitely let you know how I get on. And as a big fan of the hot stones massage (me and my Mum enjoyed one here) I'm slightly dubious.

At £35 for a pack of four, I'm expecting big things. Fingers crossed they'll live up to expectations!

Fancy trying lava shells? A home care kit can be bought at Shared Beauty Secrets.

Do the Shuffle!

Here's a bunch of GCSE leavers and their teachers from a school near my hometown, getting down to some serious 'shuffling' to LMFAO's Party Rock anthem. Let's help double their hits - they deserve it for this little gem! Classic!

Need Some Hair Inspiration?

I Liz Earle-d!

So the blogging hype finally got the better of me - and I popped to John Lewis and made my first Liz Earle purchase.

While 90% of the reviews online were from people who've been sent the product (which made me just a notch dubious) the remaining 10% were from those who'd bought the product with their own moulah - and still loved it. When you're constantly reading positive reviews about a brand online, there's got to be something in it, eh?

I opted for the Cleanse and Polish - the most famous product in the Liz Earle range, and while I'm yet to try it, I'm still pretty excited. It's been sitting in my drawer unused for the last four weeks or so, but once I've finished my current cleanser (Eve Taylor) I'll be whipping it out of its cute mint green pouch and giving it a try.

Out with the old & in with the new: Eve makes way for Liz
Liz Earle's famous Cleanse & Polish.

Any doubts I had about trying out a new skin care regime rapidly diminished after reading the following in a promotional email from Liz Earle just yesterday...

"Great news! We've won Best British Brand at the 'beauty Oscars' the CEW (UK) Awards. "

So, have I made the right decision to give Liz Earle a whirl? Do you recommend it or doesn't it live up to the hype?

Oh! And just in case you're not subscribed to the Liz Earle newsletter, the company has 'handpicked a selection of our best-loved face and body favourites to create a special Best British Brand Collection', available as of yesterday at the special price of £30 via the brand's website.

Att-en-tion! Bloggers' Aussie Bootcamp Comes to London!

Exercise and I don't really get on, which is why I stepped out of my comfort zone and into my trainers recently for Aussie Angels' bootcamp. Aussie's dedicated team of bloggers were divided into two camps; one of them went to get their hair cut and coloured and another (myself and around 30 others) were put through our paces at Canary Wharf's swanky Reebok Club.

Sounds like a tough choice, but I don't think I've ever had so much fun doing exercise! And it was mainly thanks to fellow beauty blogger Clare who, as luck would have it, happened to have booked the seat next to mine on the train to London.

The event marked the culmination of Aussie's 'Lusciously Light' challenge (read more here), set up to celebrate the brand's new range of hair products of the same name.
The extremely bendy Gymanda was our tutor for the day during 'Bootcamp' and we were all encouraged to don our special Aussie t-shirts before we took to a studio to get down to a serious workout.

Circuit training was first up, with hoola hooping (including prizes for the best hoola!), weights, kicking the c**p out of punchbags and a 'star jump station'. We jogged and jigged from station to station, lifting weights while laying on our front on small platforms and partaking in various exercises in pairs on matts between circuits.

All smiles before 'bootcamp'

Not quite sure what we're doing here...

Getting to grips with hoola hooping

Clare and I

While the exercise was nothing massively strenuous, it did highlight just how unfit I really am. But the great thing was we had 30-odd other bloggers to encourage us through it - and it really was a hoot from start to finish.

After a break for lunch and some delicious but healthy snacks, we spent an hour enjoying some serious yoga. And when I say serious, I mean serious. We were up and down like yo yos, bending our bodies into position after position (oo-er!) - my stomach is still hurting. That'll teach me to exercise more often!
Following a quick freshen up, Clare and I enjoyed a mooch around London's shops and a big slice of cake each Sorry Aussie!

Thanks to Aussie for another fun-packed day and cheers to Clare for being an excellent exercise companion - I don't think I've laughed so much!

Flower Power with Wahanda!

If you're anything of a flower fan (I have to be as I work for an online flower company during the day), you'll know that RHS Chelsea Flower show is now in full swing.

And to celebrate, staff at popular spa deals company Wahanda (who're big supporters of the annual event) have been busily creating a range of floral-inspired beauty treatments.

Not a fan of flowers but love a spot of pampering? Wahanda to the rescue, thanks to its specially designed floral treatments, including:

Bach Flower Remedies: homeopathic treatments that target negative emotional states that can cause illness.

* English Rose Treatment: An exotic rose petal foot bath and foot massage including exfoliation and massage. This treatment also offers Thai, Hawaiian and Swedish massages infused with rose and an Elemis facial. Available at the InterContinental London Park Lane.

and...

* Herbal and Flower Essence Treatments: designed to combat the signs of premature ageing, a holistic and homeopathic treatment. Available nationwide.

Personally I love the sound of the exotic rose petal foot bath and Elemis facial. Sounds divine!

Tackling Problem Skin...?

Me too! Despite being in my late twenties (sob), I'm STILL suffering from hormonal break outs and temperamental skin - which is why I was chuffed to bits when the latest products by Elemis dropped through my letterbox recently.

I've been using Elemis on and off for some years, but until now I've never found a complete skin care routine that I've stuck to 100%. I may be getting on like a house on fire with a product, but as soon as my skin shows the first signs of a break out, I'll ditch said product faster than you can say 'pizza face'.

Currently, my skin care routine consists of Eve Taylor cleanser, Karin Herzog Vit-a-Kombi 3 (for blemishes), Burt's Bees Exfoliator (once a week) and the newest addition - Elemis FreshSkin moisturiser.

Now, I don't know about you but I find the late twenties tricky in terms of skin care. While I'm not using harsh, medicated lotions and potions fit for teenage skin, I'm also not quite using anti ageing products yet.

So, if you ask me, Elemis have it spot on with their new FreshSkin line.

Elemis say: "From teens to mid-twenties it is important to have a trusted skincare range that will nurture your skin, help prevent premature ageing and brighten tired, dull and lifeless days...not to mention the effects of those late nights!"

The kind PR folk at Elemis sent me the FreshSkin Softly Softly Daily Moisturiser and the Deep Clean and Magical Moisture Face Mask Duo. The latter broke me out, despite leaving my skin silky soft initially. So true to form, I said 'ta ta' to the offending products and instead donated the handy little sachets (which are fab for popping in your suitcase for hols, by the way) to two friends who've each had a tough few weeks and needed a spot of pampering. Hope they enjoyed them!

The moisturiser, on the other hand, has fast become a firm favourite of mine. It smells divine and is beautifully light and silky on the skin. The one thing I will say is it takes a good few minutes to soak into the skin (so leave yourself enough time before applying your foundation), but what it does do is leave you with a gorgeously smooth base for applying your make-up.

Foundation application was a breeze and the product gave the skin a nice dewy look under make-up. A big hit with me and definitely worth the price, which at £20 was relatively cheap for Elemis.

Have you tried this range? What do you think? What else have you been enjoying this month?

Just in Case...

...you're not tired of reading about the Glossybox company and its fab beauty subscription service. Or, just in case you haven't yet heard of it....

I was like a child on Christmas morning when the postman rapped on the door last Friday and handed me a polka dot package. I knew straight away what it was and I couldn't wait to open it and free the little beauty from its cute cardboard box.

If you read one of my earlier posts, you'll know exactly what the 'little beauty' I'm referring to is. If not, let me fill you in...

Basically, you pay a £10 a month subscription fee (which can be cancelled at any time) and the girls behind the new GlossyBox phenomenon send you a beautiful pink box containing a selection of sample sizes of high end beauty treats wrapped in black tissue.

But we're not talking minuscule sachet-sized samples you'd get stuck to the pages of a magazine; these are mahoosive samples - and just one of the products in this month's box is worth £21.50 alone (NARS Illuminator!). So it really is a no- brainer if you love beauty - and bargains!

The real beauty of Glossybox, though, is the fact that you have no idea what you're getting, so it really does feel like a mini birthday or Crimbo.

So, what's in May's Glossybox then?

From left to right: 30ml bottle of Alternia Caviar Anti Aging Rapid Rapair Spray (for hair, I assume), NARS Orgasm Illuminator (30ml), All for Eve lipstick in the shade Eve Red, Invigorate Lotion by Como Shambhala (50ml) and Bionova cleanser for normal/dry skin (4.0ml).

Now I won't talk about how well the products perform; I haven't had much chance to try them yet. But what I will say is what you see above is definitely worth the £10 monthly subscription fee in my opinion. Plus, the cute pink box it all comes in conveniently doubles up as make-up storage!
The Glossybox team invented the concept to ensure women could afford those regular little beauty indulgences we all love - and hats off to them!

How many times have you bought a full sized luxury product, only to try it once and then swiftly put it on give it away/put it on ebay/sell it via your blog when you realise said product is the wrong shade/not worth the money/not worth the hype/just not good enough.

Want to know more about Glossybox? Head to http://www.glossybox.co.uk/ for the full lowdown on what's already becoming one of the most talked about companies in the beauty blogging community!

What do you think of the Glossybox? Good idea?

FTC Disclaimer: This product was sent to me for review consideration. I am not affiliated with the company, nor have I been paid to write this post. My opinions are 100% honest and my own, as always. What I will say is I was so thrilled with the Glossybox concept that I'm signing up for next month's box - and pronto!

One Big (But Rainy!) Weekend

Phew! Got back home in the early hours of this morning after a manic couple of days reporting for NME at Radio One's One Big Weekend festival in Carlisle.

I set off at the crack of dawn (well, 8am-ish) Saturday morning to check into this lovely little B&B in Penrith - whose staff couldn't have been more accommodating during my stay. They even let me leave my car there for a whole 2 days, despite having only stayed for the one night!

After leaving my belongings at said B&B, I jumped on the shuttle bus to the site - ready for a day of watching and interviewing acts. The day's line-up included Foo Fighters, special guests Arctic Monkeys, Plan B, Jessie J, Chase and Status, Black Eyes Peas and Nicole Scherzinger - and I managed to grab interview time with Tinie Tempah and Friendly Fires (read my mini reports here and here!).

After the Foo Fighters' fantastic closing main stage set at 9pm, I made the hour journey back to my hotel on the shuttle bus to grab a few much-needed 8 hours' sleep before I did it all again on Sunday.

Headlining the main stage on Sunday was, of course, Gaga. What a show! Joining her on the bill was My Chemical Romance, Bruno Mars, The Strokes, The Script, Taio Cruz and more. But one of the highlights of the day (for me at least) was grabbing a chat with rapper Professor Green - who revealed plans for his new album as well as a new collaboration he has his eye on. Watch this space! Seriously though, what a nice chap - he even gave me a kiss on the cheek as I sat down to speak to him.

Tinie Tempah was also a gent; offering to hold my camera, notebook and pens while I interviewed him. They're not all attitude, these rappers...

Interviewing Tinie Tempah

The lovely Professor Green
While reporting on an event like this isn't quite as glamorous as it sounds (I spent much of the weekend stuck in the press tent with about 60 fellow journos and photographers - and the rest watching bands on my own), I still had loads of fun. It was also pretty grim weather but I went prepared in wellies and huge duffel coat.

In terms of music, I caught Arctic Monkeys' set, The Strokes, Two Door Cinema Club, Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, Black Eyes Peas, Chase and Status, Tinie Tempah, Gaga and a couple of promising new bands over on the BBC Introducing stage.

Did you make it along to Carlisle too? Or did you enjoy watching the coverage with your slippers on in front of the telly?

Coming up on A Lauren to Herself....

Radio One's Big Weekend has clearly got this year's festival season off to a flying start! And if you're off to any of the UK's biggest music and camping events this year, let me help you! Over the last week or so I've been busily putting together a Festival Survival Pack (with the help of some very generous PR firms) to offer as a prize here on my blog. Containing all your festival essentials, the pack so far includes a Batiste dry shampoo gift pack, Carmex spf lip balms, Elemis facial wipes, Fake Bake bronzer and lots, lots more! Keep your eye on my blog for the chance to win these fantastic goodies - and don't forget to hit the 'Subscribe' button if you find yourself on my blog for the first time.

Going on Holiday this Summer?

...then you'll need to be prepared, which is why I'm offering my subscribers the chance to win one of two brill prizes - perfect to get ready for hitting the beach.

The preferred choice by celebrities in top LA salons, Tan Truth products have received a ton of rave reviews in the press.

I've teamed up with the PR people behind the brand to offer my subscribers the chance to win a bottle of Tan Truth Smoothing Scrub and a bottle of Smoothing Spray.

Here's the product blurb:

Smoothing Scrub - "A perfect base for your tan, use our Tantruth True Smoothing Scrub. With small, gentle, exfoliant beads it removes dead skin cells softly but effectively. Containing a delicate fragrance, it leaves the skin fresh and lightly scented."

Smoothing Spray - "To achieve a flawless and even tan, we recommend using Tantruth Smoothing Spray. This should be sprayed on potential dry areas of skin such as elbows, knees, hands and feet prior to tanning. Smoothing Spray is also excellent as an all over body moisturiser to help prolong your tan."

Sick of those dreaded mosquitoes on holiday? One runner up will receive the below products from the brand Incognito. What are they then? On offer is this hugely popular after sun moisturiser (worth £11.50) - which sold out on the brand's site four times last year!

100% natural and with no parabens, this sweet-scented moisturiser provides protection from all insects whilst out in the sun.

You'll also win two of the brand's luxury loofah soaps (worth £7 each). With a honey aroma, these soaps exfoliate and condition the skin, removing all impurities from the pores.

Simply comment the post below and I'll randomly select two winners at midday on Wednesday (May 11) and get your prizes sent out to you. You must be a subscriber to enter!

Good luck everyone!

Aussie Lusciously Lighter Challenge: Healthy Eating Tips!

As you know, I'm now a few weeks into Aussie's Lusciously Lighter challenge, which will culminate in a couple of weeks' time at a big bloggers' event in London.

How am I getting on? Ummm, not so well if I'm honest. Week one started off promising, but by the beginning of week two I was seriously flagging. Finding time to fit in the exercise has become hard (what with work and freelance deadlines) and stodgy food has crept back into my diet. I'm fully intending to step it up a gear as of tomorrow (Monday). I have a busy week ahead and sleeping well and eating better should stand me in good stead.

Are you joining me on the Aussie challenge? How have you been getting on?

In the meantime, here's the brand's latest video. This one's on healthy eating, so I'm sure a lot of us can pick up some good tips.

There's also blogs from fellow beauty bloggers already up on the site, with many more to come. Keep your eyes peeled!

Which Witch?

As the dedicated beauty blogger that I am, I've been busily testing all manner of products of late. If I'm having a bad skin day (and don't we all?) I always reach for Lush's Grease Lightning. It's just £5.40 and a little of this thyme, tea tree and witch hazel treatment really does go a long way. It works fantastically well without overdrying the skin and causing flaky patches.

So when a generous package from Witch Skincare arrived at my house, I was intrigued to try out a new regime. After all, the products contain witch hazel (er...obviously!) - which is an ingredient that has worked so well for me in the past.

Amongst the hefty stash of skin care and make-up items was these products (below). And while I'm not claiming the whole bag of Witch worked its magic on me, the Blemish Stick, Blemish Pen and Gentle Exfoliating Wash certainly stood out.

As a teenager I suffered from acne (sob) and this product was a make-up bag staple for me. It can be worn underneath your daily slap and to this day it remains a firm favourite. What I love about Witch products is that, unlike other skin care lotions and potions, they aren't overly drying and you don't get that nasty stinging sensation upon application. And at around £2 in Boots currently, this one's a real winner

Witch's Gentle Exfoliating Wash (£4.03 - Superdrug.com) was the real stand out product for me. My skin felt super soft after use, which made applying make-up a dream. In fact, after using this I could even skip my morning moisturiser. The only thing I would say is use once to twice a week at most - any more than that and you'll risk over exfoliating which will result in oily, shiny skin.

Next on my skin care wish list is the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish; I've heard so many rave reviews about the product! What are your skin care saviours?

FTC Disclaimer: These products were sent to me by Witch for review consideration. I am in no way affiliated with the company, neither have I been paid to write this post. All opinions are 100% honest and my own, as always.

The Taming of the...Frizz

As someone with near poker straight hair, I don't suffer too badly from frizz. But what I do hate is knots. They can just er...well, get knotted.

So I was thankful when a little bottle of Bumble and Bumble's DeFrizz dropped through my letterbox last week.

Available from Windle and Moodle for £8.58 in a handy travel size, this is the perfect product to slip into your hand luggage. Not only that but it really does go a long way, too - only 2 to 3 drops are needed with each use.

Oh and apparently Sarah Michelle Gellar had Defrizz sent to the set of Scooby Doo.

But does that make it a must-have product? Here's the website blurb: "It [the product] coats the hair with an ultra-light emulsion that creates a barrier against humidity and helps control curl, frizz and flyaway hair. It has a lovely, silky sheen and it's much lighter than most oils or emollients. "

And the directions: "Apply a few drops (depending on length) to damp or dry hair, and style."

So what did I think?
I'm not going to lie; this product wasn't a miracle worker. I didn't use it to tame frizz as such. Instead I opted to try this for flyaway hair as a general styling product.

My first impressions? After applying the product to towel dried hair and blasting with the dryer, my hair did feel a little sticky. Now I'm not too sure whether I used too much of the Defrizz or if the product was just 'getting to work' at styling and moulding my otherwise silky smooth hair. A couple of sprays of Batiste dry shampoo later (this always works a treat when I've gone overboard with a product) and my barnet was a dream to style. Not only that but it actually seemed to retain the volume you achieve during a blow dry all day. A big thumbs up for me on that front. But would I repurchase? Let me give it a few more goes... I'm certainly pretty impressed after the first application. Oh and the knots are also long gone!

Have you tried anything from the Bumble and Bumble brand? What do you think? Or what are your hair saviours?

FTC Disclaimer: I have not been paid to do this review, nor am I affiliated with the company. The product was sent to me for free but my opinions are 100% honest and my own, as ever.

A Royally Good Weekend!

Can I start this post with a small confession? The weekend's festivities did nothing to help me on my Aussie Lusciously Lighter challenge. Sob. I stuffed my face with all the pastries, cakes and the like my stomach could well, er...stomach on the day of the long-awaited Royal Wedding. Well, if you can't do it then when can you?

My weekend was spent down south (Hastings) visiting my sister, brother-in-law and my two nephews and the whole family made like true Brits with copious quantities of buffet food and booze. Get in!

Saturday and Sunday we hotfooted it to the seaside (Brighton and Hastings) for a quintessentially British day out. We Go-Karted, drank Slush Puppies, ate hot doughnuts, fish and chips and candy floss, and played on the 2p machines until our coppers ran out! Great stuff.

I clearly went to town on the Royal Wedding 'tat'

My sister, waving from her window a la Kate on the palace balcony.

Britain at its best: Brighton seaside on a sunny bank holiday
Horses. Just like the ones that transported Kate from church to palace. Or not.
Anyone for jellied eels?

Kate Middleton and my very own Prince ; )
Even the Brighton seafood got into the patriotic swing of things

Elsewhere in the old 'blogosphere' (hate that 'word'), some lovely ladies were celebrating the Royal Wedding in their own special way.

Frankie over at Love Audrey enjoyed traditional festivities with family and friends in her parents' garden. Hop on over to her blog and feast your eyes on the delicious homemade fare on offer at her quaint little garden party.

Beauty blogger Louise 'nailed it' with some stunning Royal Wedding-inspired nail polishes over on Lou Lou Land and fellow Aussie Angel Emma of the blog Computergirl's Musings sat down to watch the footage in her jim jams -good plan, if you ask me!

But perhaps the biggest pat on the back should go to Kimberlee - an American Twitter friend of mine who rolled out of her comfy bed at 4am, ordered Belgian waffles, whipped cream and strawberries and watched the Royal action on her couch. For that Kimberlee, you're an honorary Brit!

How did you celebrate the big day?
